Peter and Rosalee Van-Helsdingen, owners of Feastivities Events and Catering, will be taking over Calamus Estate Winery as of September 5th, 2018. The winery was founded in 1999 by Derek Saunders and Pat Latin, who purchased a 14-acre property near Beamsville, and planted their first vineyard in 2000, with the aim of supporting an 8500-case winery. They later purchased a second farm and 19th-century barn in 2002, which is now the home of Calamus Estate Winery.
In 2007, Sheila Minkhorst joined the winery as a partner. The name Calamus, meaning arrow in Latin, was inspired by the many ancient artifacts found in the region.
Calamus Estate Winery has a 20-acre ravine behind it, which provides a scenic spot for hikes, picnics, and outdoor functions, as it is adjacent to the famous Bruce Trail. The patio, overlooking a vineyard and the nearby Ball's Falls Conservation Area, can seat 82 people on the main deck and another 36 on the upper VIP level. Below, there is a fire pit where people can enjoy icewine s'mores, and at the top of the building, Van-Helsdingen has kept the former owner's 360-degree telescope, where his once-a-month stargazing nights are always sold out.
Calamus Estate Winery grows Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Vidal Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. They have two vineyards, the Falls Vineyard site located in the Vinemount Ridge Appellation and the Battle Creek Vineyard on the eastern edge of the town of Beamsville below the Niagara Escarpment.
The Bartlett Creek and Falls Vineyard sites have a total area of 56 acres, with 32 acres of land in vines. Their signature wines include Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir.
Peter and Rosalee Van-Helsdingen are excited to take over the reins of Calamus Estate Winery and continue the tradition of producing award-winning wines that reflect the terroir of the Niagara region. Their philosophy is that value drives award-winning wines, and they are committed to maintaining this tradition while also innovating and adapting to new winemaking techniques.
