King’s Court Estate Winery is a seventh-generation, family-owned winery with ancestral roots in Germany. Under winemaker Josef Zimmermann, the family tradition is alive and well in Niagara! Known for their old-world influences, they proudly produce a variety of wines including Riesling and Merlot.
The Winery was founded in 1990 by Josef and his wife Siglinde Zimmerman. The Zimmerman's can trace their wine making back to 1723 in Germany. Kaiser Wlihem a German king is said to have tasted the Zimmerman wine and was impressed. The family's winery became known as Kings Vineyard.
Josef's Canadian winemaking career began in 1976 when he joined one of Canada's largest wineries, Jordan and Ste. Michelle Cellars, at its West Coast operation in Victoria. From 1977 to 1978, Josef introduced new grape growing and winemaking technology to the young Canadian grape growing industry.
In 1980, Josef was relocated to the company's home office in Ontario, where in recognition of his hard work and expertise, he was appointed Director of Viticulture, Oenology, and Research for Canada. The winery is best known for its icewines. They cultivate 60 acres of vines.
